I love technology, but not as much as my family, but still I love technology...always and forever...
The reason for my profession of love for technology is because today, after being here for over a week, I finally got the internet! I was even able to see my family because they love me enough to stay up late so we could Skype after I got the internet. It was so nice to see their smiling, albeit tired, faces.
Having newly gotten the internet, I was finally able to check my email, which I had only be able to sporadically in the few days I was staying with my friends. I had an email from my friend, Candy. I was so excited because I had missed her very much after we left last summer and was anxiously waiting to see her. She told me that Mr. Ding wanted to offer me the opportunity to teach an additional class on the weekend for non-English majors at the school to learn American English. I was intrigued as to what this entailed and after emailing back and forth, decided to go to her office and talk face to face. (Side note: In order to get to her office, I had to pass by the bathrooms, or W.C.s. This ain't no lie, the smell coming out of the bathrooms is so bad that the flies congregate AROUND the corner from the bathroom! So I held my breath and ran through the cloud of flies and found her office.) I was so glad to see her! We discussed the plans for the new class and then returned to my room where I gave her my present, which was much better than the clock we presented her with last summer. (Culture note: It is considered bad luck to receive a clock as a give here. It's like an omen of death. Oops!) While we were catching up at my apartment, there was a knock on the door. Who could it be? I don't know anyone here besides Candy....Michael, one of our translators from last summer was there. He had heard from his friend that I was back and came to see me. It was nice to catch up and let him know how the teachers were doing and to hear about some of our translators.
Once they left, I sat down to do some real blogging. However, much to my dismay, I found out that my blogsite was blocked. As Stephanie Tanner (Full House) would say, "How rude!" At first, I didn't know what was going on, just a screen with a bunch of characters popped up, and since I can't read the characters I didn't know what it was saying. I thought it might be like the screen you get in Firefox when it says the server is too slow or whatever, so I just kept on persisting in trying to get to the blogsite. In hindsight, that may not have been the best idea. I also discovered that beloved Facebook is blocked. Alas, there is more than one way to skin a cat, and I shall prevail! I looked for all kinds of solutions to the primary concern of being unable to chronicle these experiences, and who would have the solution, none other than Google. Perhaps more than technology, I love Google. Please allow me to get in my soapbox for a while and extole the virtues of Google: Gmail - 'nuff said, Google sites - the solution to my blogging woes, and Google reader - the other half of my blogging woes because I can at least read my sister's blog even if I can't see the adorable pictures of my nephews or the video of their house.
Life is good and father has abundantly provided!
